Recently I was asked to give a seminar to the local high school football team about the nutritional needs of young athletes in order to burn fat and build healthy muscle, "Bulk-Up"...the anti-diet!
95% of the work I do is with middle aged women (and we wonder why I can't find a guy to date!!) who are dealing with a myriad of health issues and need to, among other things, lose weight!
Guess what? The food for both of the needs listed above ARE THE SAME!!! Whether your goal is to add or lose weight, the foods are the same...healthy carbohydrates, lean proteins, good fats, lot's of water. So guess what the difference is?? HOW MUCH OF IT WE EAT!!! Yep, it's all about portion control. Some of us want to eat as much as our 17 year old athlete, and we do no where near the physical activity needed to burn those calories (units of energy). If you're "eating all the right foods" and still not able to reach your weight loss goals, ask yourself whether you are eating the right portion sizes. #1 suggestion from an expert (aka- me!) is to journal, and I know how much we hate to do it... I hate to do it, but it is the best way to get a clear picture of what we are actually eating!
