So, what's a girl (OK middle aged woman) to do?
My first answer to that question is: Stop looking in the mirror. No, now, I will continue to apply the make-up and do the hair, but once I start focusing on "what's wrong" with me, I need to change my focus. I didn't have time in my 30's and 40's to focus on myself...I hardly had time to apply make-up or do my hairdo... so I seriously thought all those dissatisfied feelings about my looks that I had in my teens and twenty's were long gone!
Suddenly, they are returning...like a bad taco or a forgotten nightmare. Why now?
Well, "Middle Age" is more that just a new age category. A lot of changes take place for women during our fifties and sixties. Menopause, grey hair, reading glasses, wrinkles, empty-nest, more and more of us are getting divorced, we start to lose friends to things like cancer and disease, or we deal with it ourselves. We take care of aging parents...the list goes on and on...
Some of us just give up completely, we buy smaller mirrors and wear black stretchy pants and tell ourselves we "have a good personality". Some of us go the way of the knife, and it can be really scary. I see the plastic surgery (appropriate name for it) women in the grocery store sometimes and have to wonder if they catch me staring with my mouth wide open. I just hope they don't mistake my look of horror... for admiration. I just want to hug them with love and compassion and tell them to stop.
And then there are those who try to strike a balance, maybe we color our greys, but we also make sure we get the right amount of rest and water...maybe we get an eyelid tuck, but we exercise and eat our dark leafy green veggies. Remember, good health and looking healthy is an "inside-out" job... NOT the other way around...AND- we've earned those wrinkles and the wisdom that comes along with them.
So, I'll keep eating my kale and doing my yoga...but the turkey gobbler may have a "limited engagement" hanging around my neck.
